A Tribute

.

.

This piece is in honor of my son,  Evan,  who,  after 12 years since it was first written for him during those halcyon days of not-so-long ago,  as one of the Boys of Summer,  living his dreams and playing his heart out upon the battlefields of little league,  has finally approached the end of the beginning of his life,  and will soon graduate magna cum laude from Florida State University,  with degrees in Actuarial Science and Financial Engineering,  and thereafter will begin his career under the grand auspices of Towers, Perrin in Atlanta . . . which proves,  beyond a shadow of a doubt,  that it is not how near,  nor how far the acorn falls from the tree,  but only the quality of the soil in which it has grown . . .

.

I was so proud of him,  then,  as I am of him,  still . . .

And as of the present day,  now almost 3½ years later,  he has again moved on,  as most young,  ambitious,  and purpose-driven people do,  to one of many horizons that await him . . . ready to carve his mark upon yet another titan of global commerce,  Price Waterhouse Cooper,  and leaving his former employers mulling over their collective balance sheets,  weighing the loss of this valuable asset . . .

while this very afternoon,  he called from Hawaii to announce his engagement to his long-beloved Andrea . . . and beginning yet another chapter in the book of his life . . . and still following his dream,  his eyes still on the prize,  down these paths of summer,  toward home . . .
